Brian froze, dumbfounded, listening through the closet door.

“…and by the time I got to it, the damage was already done,” came Hank’s voice. “I honestly can’t figure it out, Mr. Burke—”

“Call me Dennis,” His father said. “Vince? What do you think?”

“I think Hank’s being too hard on himself,” Mr. Simonelli’s gravelly voice replied. “That boiler’s thirty years old. But coming right after the fire—”

“Exactly,” came a fourth voice: Mr. Costain. “This just looks bad.”

“Let’s get out of here,” Brian whispered. “It’s just my dad—”

“Shut up!” Liz hissed.

“I’m not going to stay here and eavesdrop!”

“Brian Burke, if you don’t shut up,” she hissed back. “I’ll…I’ll say we were making out!”

“What?” he said, aghast.

“Shut up!”

He did. But he still wanted to see what was going on. Carefully he moved to the crack between the double doors. “I’m just going to watch,” he whispered. “I’ll be quiet.”

“You better!”

He peered through the crack and saw his dad sitting behind his desk, and Mr. Costain, Mr. Simonelli and Hank sitting in the armchairs.

“—if we could just get the blueprints we could be sure,” Mr. Simonelli was saying. “But we can’t. The only copies are in the state archives.”

“So let’s get them,” his dad said.

“We need a court order.” Mr. Simonelli snorted. “Don’t you love bureaucracy? Never mind. Hank and I are keeping the power off until we figure this out. And I was hoping that when Dan’s in Harrisburg…”

“Yes, that’s what I was thinking,” his father said. “When are you leaving, Dan?”

Mr. Costain sighed. “Emily and I are leaving Monday; along with Danny, Jeremy and Sophia.”

The other men glanced at him curiously. “Wasn’t this supposed to be a business trip?” Mr. Simonelli said.

“Yes.” Mr. Costain sighed again. “But my wife and I decided to make it a vacation too. We really haven’t had a break since the school started. So we’re staying at my in-laws and taking along the kids, except for Celia, Miranda and John Mark.”

“John Mark’s staying?” his dad asked.

“Celia insisted on it. She volunteered herself and her sister to babysit him.” Mr. Costain smiled wryly. “I’m not sure if she told Miranda beforehand. Anyway, this shouldn’t change things on the business side. I’ll be meeting with your lawyer on Monday, and the hearings on Thursday. In the meantime we just got to make sure there are no more incidents.”

“And for that we need the blueprints.” His father pulled out a business card and scribbled something on it. “I’m going to give Pete a call.”

“Pete?’ Liz whispered. “Who’s that?”

“Pete Hegseth,” Brian whispered back. “He’s a state senator. My dad knows him.”

“—and we don’t really need power now, do we?” His dad cracked a smile. “You can keep the kids busy with drywall and painting until this gets sorted out. But Vince, I don’t think you should depend on Liz to double-check things.”

“Don’t worry,” Mr. Simonelli said gruffly. “I fired her.”

Brian winced. Liz’s hand had tightened painfully on his wrist.

“But then there’s the matter of inspections,” Mr. Costain said. “Not totally unexpected—the city has always been hostile to us.
